September 1, 1715: Advent of Louis XV .…………………………………………. …           Louis XIV died in Versailles on September 1, 1715, four days before his seventy-seventh birthday. No one in the world will have reigned as long as he (72 years). The Sun King leaves a France at the height of its power but exhausted by wars, especially the last one: the war of the Spanish Succession. His great-grandson of 5 years succeeds him under the name of Louis XV. The Sun King instituted by will a Regency Council chaired by Duke Philippe d’Orléans (41), first prince of the blood. But as he is wary of this nephew, who has the reputation of a debauchee, and is eyeing the throne, he plans to entrust the education of the little king to the duke of Maine, the son he had of Madame de Montespan! Dissatisfied with these dispositions, Philip of Orleans asks the Parliament of Paris the following day to break the will. In exchange for this service, parliamentarians get their right of remonstrance restored to them. Fatal concession that will alter the royal power until the Revolution! If the wishes of the late Louis XIV had been respected, perhaps the bourgeois revolution of 1789 would not have taken place. And Louis XV certainly would not have sunk so much into debauchery

The governor of Chandernagor (India) offered Louis XV a rhinoceros. After a two-year journey, the animal landed in Lorient. There, he had to wait two and a half months for a special ox cart to be transported to the royal menagerie at Versailles, where he would be exposed to the public for twenty-two years. During a stopover at the Ile de France (today Mauritius), the public was admitted on board to come see him.

Writer Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, who was among the visitors, noticed that the rhinoceros was strong and nasty but that he tolerated, however, as a friend, a little goat who shared his hay between his legs He will be found dead September 23, 1793, his remains will be transported to the Museum of Natural History where we will realize the first modern taxidermy operation on an animal of this size. At the time of its restoration in 1992, it was realized that his horn did not belong to him: it was an African black rhinoceros horn which had been added to him, the original having disappeared.
