Description
Bordered by the Seine, the 13th arrondissement of Paris, located on the left bank, includes the Butte-aux-Cailles, the Faubourg Saint-Marcel, the Asian district as well as Paris Rive Gauche, a modern urban area overlooking the Seine.
It has some important architectural landmarks such as the François-Mitterrand Library, the Gobelins Manufacture, the Gare d’Austerlitz and the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
This small neighborhood began to come to life in the 18th century. As its name says, the place looks like a small hill in the middle of which flowed a river, now underground: the Bièvre. French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau liked to come to walk there to admire the mills along the river and to find some peace and quiet. It is also where hot air balloons come to land.
However, the Butte aux Cailles is mainly the district of the tanners. These industries begin to pollute the river which is transforms little by little into a true open-air sewer. It was covered little by little between 1850 and 1950. It is still found under the streets. It is also here that the first horse butchery (which sells horse meat) opened in 1866: the poverty of the inhabitants forced them to eat this kind of easily accessible meat.
Unlike other areas of Paris, the Butte aux Cailles has never undergone any real architectural changes.
